KATHMANDU, Aug 19
Tribhuvan University (TU) Vice Chancellor´s Office appointed Dr Prakash Sayami as dean of TU Teaching Hospital (TUTH)´s Institute of Medicine (IoM) on Saturday. With this, Dr Govinda KC, chief of the Orthopedics Department at TUTH, broke his six-day-old fast-unto-death.
“A five member executive committee of TU appointed Dr Sayami to the post on the basis of his capability and seniority,” said Guna Nidhi Neupane, rector at TU.
Dr KC was taken to the coronary care unit (CCU) right after he broke his fast and sipped juice his patients offered him at TUTH. Doctors involved in his treatment said his condition was stable.
Dr KC was weakened by the fast-unto-death to press for key posts at TUTH to be filled on the basis of merit or experience rather than through political appointment.
Similarly, Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has withdrawn its protest program following the appointment.
Standing in support of Dr KC, NMA had closed all medical services apart from emergency, at hospitals across the country on Friday.
“This appointment has laid the foundation for the reconstruction of TUTH, which was losing its momentum due to political interference at every step,” said Dr Bhupendra Kumar Basnet, general secretary, NMA.
Earlier in the day at a meeting with TU officials, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai had recommended the name of Dr Sayami for appointment as TUTH dean. Dr Prakash Sayami is one of the seniormost professors and cardiologists at TUTH and is also considered the preferred one among hospital staff.
Dr Sayami, 57, has been in the medical field since the last 35 years. He stood board second in the SLC board examination 1969, the same year that PM Bhattarai stood board first.
“Being a non-political person, it was never my wish to hold an administrative post,” Dr Sayami told Republica after his appointment. “I will try my best to avoid political pressure on the institution for which Dr KC placed his life on razor edge.”
He further said that PM Bhattarai called him asking him to accept the post. “The PM asked me to take on the responsibility as Dr KC´s condition was worsening.”
Dr Sayami will be serving as IoM dean for the next four years.
